The New Mexico Environment Department, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, and New Mexico Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources have nominated perennial surface waters of the State that are located in Wilderness areas within United States Forest Service lands as Outstanding National Resource Waters (ONRWs).  ONRWs receive the highest level of protection under the state Water Quality Act.  If successful, this nomination will protect approximately 700 miles of 192 perennial rivers and streams, 29 lakes, and approximately 6,000 acres of wetlands.

For more information about ONRWs or the process for nominating waters as ONRWs, please contact the Director of NMED's Water & Waste Management Division, Marcy Leavitt, at (505) 827-1758.
