Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Office
The DOE Oversight Bureau office responsible for oversight and monitoring of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
The New Mexico Environment Department has granted a Hazardous Waste Facility Permit to WIPP for the storage and disposal of transuranic mixed waste. The permittees are currently the DOE Carlsbad Field Office and Washington TRU Solutions LLC.
The State of New Mexico's authority to regulate WIPP for the protection of human health and the environment is governed under the New Mexico Hazardous Waste Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Under the these acts, state programs are authorized to operate in lieu of the Environmental Protection Agency in regulating radioactive mixed wastes and in enforcing hazardous waste facility permits.
The WIPP office collects penetrating radiation monitoring samples from locations along the WIPP route and from the exhaust shaft at the facility itself. The bureau is developing plans for soil, sediment and biota monitoring at WIPP. You can find more information about WIPP on the New Mexico Environment Department WIPP page.
Publications and monitoring data related to oversight at WIPP can be found on this site.
