  • The NMED Targeted Brownfields Assessment Program provides Targeted Environmental Assessment Services and technical oversight at eligible brownfields sites in the state.

The NMED Brownfields Program may offer free Targeted Brownfields Assessment (TBA) services at tribally or municipally owned brownfields.  TBA funds can only be used for:

    • Site screenings
    • Phase I environmental site assessments
    • Phase II environmental site assessments
    • Phase III remediation planning costs
    • Remediation

Eligible sites for TBA support include those with known or suspected contamination such as CERCLA designated hazardous substances and waste, petroleum hydrocarbons and asbestos.  Contact the Voluntary Remediation Program if you have any questions concerning the eligibility of a site and/or contaminants for TBA services.

Requests will be based on the following criteria for prioritization:

    • Is it a Brownfields site
    • Redevelopment or reuse potential
    • Economic benefit to the surrounding community
    • Benefits to the environment
    • Public interest
    • Availability of funding

There are some situations which would make the site ineligible, such as:

    • The municipality is responsible for the contamination
    • The site is owned by the Federal Government
    • The site is on the National Priority List (NPL)

Interested parties should prepare a request letter and send it to the VRP Program Manger at the following address, or call (505) 827-2754 for further information:
