The NMED Brownfields Program may offer free Targeted Brownfields Assessment (TBA) services at tribally or municipally owned brownfields. TBA funds can only be used for:
- Site screenings
- Phase I environmental site assessments
- Phase II environmental site assessments
- Phase III remediation planning costs
- Remediation
Eligible sites for TBA support include those with known or suspected contamination such as CERCLA designated hazardous substances and waste, petroleum hydrocarbons and asbestos. Contact the Voluntary Remediation Program if you have any questions concerning the eligibility of a site and/or contaminants for TBA services.
Requests will be based on the following criteria for prioritization:
- Is it a Brownfields site
- Redevelopment or reuse potential
- Economic benefit to the surrounding community
- Benefits to the environment
- Public interest
- Availability of funding
There are some situations which would make the site ineligible, such as:
- The municipality is responsible for the contamination
- The site is owned by the Federal Government
- The site is on the National Priority List (NPL)
