Landfarming System Schematic (8 K)
Excavated soil is spread on the ground and periodically tilled to aerate and encourage bacterial growth. Nutrients, minerals, and/or moisture may be added to speed degradation. Sometimes bacteria which have been selected for their success in breaking down hydrocarbons are added. Collection of leachate may be necessary.
Works on: all petroleum
Less Effective: heavy petroleum (takes longer)
Speed: 6-24 months
Cost: $30-60 / ton of soil
Soil requirements: hydrocarbons <50,000 ppm, heavy metals < 2,500 ppm
