Waste characterization is usually the first step
in determining what to do with waste. Characterization is the
scientific process of analyzing the physical, chemical and
radiological properties of waste in order to establish a uniform
method for the treatment, conditioning, processing, storage,
handling and disposal of waste.

Most
of what we as a society manufacture has the negative effect of
creating waste. Unfortunately, the waste we produce is often
hazardous to the environment and stays with us, like an unwanted
house guest. How harmful a particular waste is to air, land,
water and human beings is dependent upon the nature of such waste
and where it resides.
